The idea to write this book came to Dickens when he travelled to the north of England to speak at the Manchester Athenaeum, a philanthropic organisation that helped the people who wore not emancipated, ore educated  but poor. They wore exploited by factory owners and ignored by the rest of the population. The book was first published in London in 1843 and was a huge success. It sold out within six weeks.
